Chile is a long, narrow country located on the western coast of South America. It is bordered by Peru to the north, Bolivia and Argentina to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. With an area of 756,950 square kilometers (292,260 square miles), Chile stretches over 4,300 kilometers (2,670 miles) from its northernmost point in Arica to its southernmost tip in Cape Horn. Chile’s geography is characterized by a wide range of topography and climates. In the north lies a narrow coastal plain which transitions into rolling hills as one moves southwards. This region enjoys a mild climate with average temperatures ranging between 15-25°C throughout most parts of the year while rainfall averages between 50-100 mm per annum making it suitable for growing crops such as sugarcane and cotton among other things. Further south lies Chile’s central valley which is flanked by two mountain ranges; The Andes Mountains to its east and The Coastal Range to its west. This valley has an arid climate with temperatures ranging from 5-20°C throughout most parts of the year while rainfall averages between 100-200 mm per annum making it suitable for growing grapes and olives among other crops. The eastern side of Chile consists mainly of highlands that are characterized by rugged terrain with altitudes reaching up to 6500 meters above sea level while temperatures here range between -5 – 15°C throughout most parts of the year making it ideal for skiing activities during winter months. Further south lies Patagonia which consists mainly of lowlands with altitudes ranging between 500 – 1500 meters above sea level while temperatures here average between 5 – 20°C throughout most parts of the year making it suitable for both agricultural activities as well as eco-tourism activities such as hiking or camping safaris. Finally there are also several islands located off Chile’s coast including Easter Island which is home to some ancient stone monuments known as moai statues that were constructed by early inhabitants some 800 years ago. Overall Chile has a varied geography with diverse climates throughout each region allowing for different types of activities such as skiing in its highlands or eco-tourism in Patagonia while its coastal plains provide fertile land for agricultural activities such as sugarcane cultivation or olive harvesting among other things.
