Chad is a landlocked country located in the heart of Africa. It has an area of 1.28 million square kilometers and is bordered by Libya to the north, Sudan to the east, Central African Republic to the south, Cameroon and Nigeria to the southwest and Niger to the west. The geography of Chad is divided into several distinct regions including the northern desert region, central Sahelian region, southern savanna grasslands and western highlands. The northern desert region covers most of northern Chad and is characterized by a dry climate with sparse vegetation. Temperatures here can reach up to 50°C during summer months while winter temperatures can drop down to -10°C making it one of the hottest countries in the world. The central Sahelian region covers most of Central Chad and consists mainly of semi-arid grasslands with some areas of shrubland and wooded savannas. This region receives an average annual rainfall ranging from 400-600 mm per annum making it suitable for both grazing livestock as well as some cultivation activities such as millet or sorghum crops. The southern savanna grasslands cover much of Southern Chad extending from Lake Chad in the east towards Cameroon in the west. This region has a semi-arid climate with temperatures ranging from 20-30°C throughout most parts of the year while rainfall averages between 700-800 mm per annum making it suitable for cultivating maize and groundnuts among other crops. Finally there are also western highlands located along Chad’s border with Cameroon which consist mainly of mountains reaching up to 2,000 meters above sea level as well as numerous valleys which form part of its drainage system. This area receives an average annual rainfall ranging from 1,200-1,500 mm per annum making it suitable for growing coffee and tea crops among other things while its cooler climate makes it popular for eco-tourism activities such as hiking or bird watching safaris. Overall Chad has a varied geography with diverse climates throughout each region allowing for different types of agricultural activities such as livestock rearing in its Sahelian regions or coffee cultivation in its western highlands while its savanna grasslands provide a home for many species making them popular destinations for eco-tourism activities such as game drives or bird watching safaris.
