Cameroon is a country located in Central and West Africa. It is bordered by Nigeria to the west, Chad to the northeast, the Central African Republic to the east, and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Cameroon has an area of 475,442 square kilometers, making it slightly larger than California. It has a coastline on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. The terrain of Cameroon consists mostly of mountains in the western region with plateaus and hills in other areas. The highest point is Mount Cameroon at 4,095 meters (13,435 feet). The country also has several large rivers such as Benue River which flows from north-east to south-west and forms part of its eastern border with Nigeria. There are several lakes in Cameroon including Lake Chad which lies on its northern border with Chad; Lake Nyos which is a crater lake formed by a volcanic eruption; and Lake Monoun which lies south-west of Mount Cameroon. The climate varies by region with tropical rainforest climate along its coastal region while savanna climate dominates most of its interior regions.
