Burundi is a small landlocked country located in Central Africa and bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has a total area of 27,834 square kilometers and is divided into 18 provinces. The country’s terrain is mostly hilly with some mountains in the east. The climate of Burundi is tropical with warm temperatures year-round. Average temperatures range between 66°F (19°C) during winter months to 88°F (31°C) during summer months. Rainfall tends to be heaviest in the western part of the country while the eastern part receives less rain throughout the year. Burundi’s landscape consists mostly of savanna grasslands with a variety of plants and animals such as warthogs, hippopotamuses and buffalos. The country also contains several protected areas such as Kibira National Park which provides an ideal habitat for wildlife such as elephants, giraffes and various species of birds.
