Bulgaria is a small country located in Eastern Europe and bordered by Romania, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey. It has a total area of 110,994 square kilometers and is divided into 28 regions. The country’s terrain is mostly mountainous with plains in the north and northeast. The coastline of Bulgaria stretches over 354 kilometers along the Black Sea and provides plenty of opportunities for fishing and other water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, diving and sailing. The country also has several rivers including the Danube which forms part of its border with Romania. The climate of Bulgaria is temperate continental with cold winters and hot summers. Average temperatures range between 23°F (-5°C) during winter months to 86°F (30°C) during summer months. Rainfall tends to be heaviest in the northern part of the country while the drier southern part receives less rain throughout the year. Bulgaria’s landscape consists mostly of mountains with a variety of plants and animals such as bears, wolves, chamois and wild boar. The country also contains several protected areas such as Rila National Park which provides an ideal habitat for wildlife such as eagles, vultures and various species of birds.
