Bolivia is a landlocked country located in the heart of South America. It has an area of 424,164 square miles, making it the 28th largest country in the world. Bolivia is bordered by Peru, Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile. The landscape of Bolivia is diverse and consists of three distinct regions: the Andean region in the west, the Amazonian region in the east and the Chaco region in between. The Andean region is home to some of Bolivia’s highest mountains such as Huayna Potosi at 20,890 feet (6,388 meters) and Sajama at 21,463 feet (6,542 meters). This area is covered with snow-capped peaks and glaciers as well as dense vegetation and wildlife such as llamas, vicuñas and alpacas. The Amazonian region consists of tropical rainforests with a variety of plant and animal species such as jaguars, howler monkeys and toucans. The Chaco region is a vast dry plain with cactus plants and sparse vegetation. The coastline of Bolivia has no lagoons or beaches but provides plenty of opportunities for fishing and other water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, diving and sailing. The climate of Bolivia varies by elevation with cooler temperatures in higher elevations while lower elevations tend to be warmer year-round.
