Bhutan is a small, landlocked country located in the eastern Himalayas, bordered by India and China. Its total land area is 18,000 square miles, making it one of the smallest countries in the world. Bhutan has a diverse landscape with rugged terrain in the north and valleys in the south. The northern part of the country is dominated by the Great Himalayan Range, which includes several peaks such as Jomolhari at 24,035 feet (7,326 meters). These mountains are covered with dense vegetation and wildlife. To the south of these mountains lie two major rivers: the Torsa River and Manas River. These rivers are home to a variety of plant and animal species such as tigers, leopards, snow leopards, lynx, red pandas and Himalayan black bears. The coastline of Bhutan is dotted with lagoons that provide habitat for aquatic species such as turtles and dolphins. The coastline also provides plenty of opportunities for fishing and other water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, diving and sailing. The climate of Bhutan is temperate with warm temperatures year-round. The rainy season runs from June to September while October through May tends to be dryer.
