Benin is a small country located in West Africa, bordered by Nigeria and Togo. Its total land area is 43,483 square miles, making it the largest country in West Africa. Benin has a diverse landscape with flat coastal plains and hills in the interior. The northern part of the country is dominated by the Atacora Mountains, which include several peaks such as Mont Sokbaro at 1,322 feet (403 meters) and Mont Sokbaro at 1,940 feet (592 meters). These mountains are covered with dense vegetation and wildlife. To the south of these mountains lie two major rivers: the Oueme River and Mono River. These rivers are home to a variety of plant and animal species such as hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and cheetahs. The coastline of Benin is dotted with lagoons that provide habitat for aquatic species such as turtles and manatees. The coastline also provides plenty of opportunities for fishing and other water activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, diving and sailing. The climate of Benin is tropical with warm temperatures year-round. The rainy season runs from April to July while August through October tends to be dryer.
