Belgium is a small country located in Western Europe, bordered by France to the south, the Netherlands to the north, Germany and Luxembourg to the east. It has an area of 30,528 square kilometers and a population of over 11 million people. The capital city is Brussels which is also the country’s largest city with more than 1 million inhabitants. The geography of Belgium is characterized by its lowland terrain with numerous rivers and lakes in addition to forests covering much of the country. The highest peak in Belgium is Botrange at 694 meters above sea level which is located near the border with Germany. Other notable mountains are Signal de Botrange and Fagnes de Wégimont. The climate in Belgium varies depending on elevation but generally has mild summers and cold winters with temperatures ranging from 0°C to 22°C throughout the year. Rainfall averages around 800mm per year with higher amounts falling during summer months while winter usually sees some rainfall across much of the country. Belgium also experiences extreme weather conditions such as thunderstorms during summer months while winter brings strong winds to parts of northern regions of the country. Hailstorms are common during spring months while floods can occur due to heavy rainfall or melting snow from higher elevations during spring or early summer months.
