The Bahamas is an archipelagic country located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Florida, USA and Cuba. It has an area of 13,878 square kilometers and a population of over 400,000 people. The capital city is Nassau which is also the country’s largest city with more than 250,000 inhabitants. The Bahamas’ geography is characterized by its numerous islands and cays with many shallow lagoons between them. The highest peak in the Bahamas is Mount Alvernia on Cat Island at 63 meters above sea level which is located on the largest island of New Providence. Other notable islands include Grand Bahama, Abaco and Eleuthera. The climate in the Bahamas varies depending on elevation but generally has hot summers and mild winters with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 35°C throughout the year. Rainfall averages around 1200mm per year with higher amounts falling during summer months while winter usually sees some rainfall across much of the country. The Bahamas also experiences extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes during summer months while winter brings strong winds to parts of northern and eastern regions of the country. Thunderstorms are common during spring months while flooding can occur due to heavy rainfall or storm surges from hurricanes during summer or early fall months.
