Azerbaijan is a country located in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia bordered by Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Iran. It has an area of 86,600 square kilometers and a population of 10 million people. The capital city is Baku which is also the country’s largest city with more than 2.2 million inhabitants. Azerbaijan’s geography is characterized by its varied terrain with plains in the west, hills in the east and mountains in the north. The highest peak in Azerbaijan is Bazarduzu at 4485 meters above sea level which is located in the Greater Caucasus mountain range. Other notable mountains include Shahdag (4243m), Babadag (3295m) and Tufandag (3046m). The climate in Azerbaijan varies depending on elevation but generally has hot summers and cold winters with temperatures ranging from -8°C to 35°C throughout the year. Rainfall averages around 500mm per year with higher amounts falling during winter months while summer usually sees some rainfall across much of the country. Azerbaijan also experiences extreme weather conditions such as dust storms during summer months while winter brings snowfall to parts of northern and eastern regions of the country. Thunderstorms are common during spring months while floods can occur due to heavy rainfall or melting snow from higher elevations during spring or early summer months.
