Austria is a country located in Central Europe bordered by Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It has an area of 83,879 square kilometers and a population of 8.8 million people. The capital city is Vienna which is also the country’s largest city with more than 1.7 million inhabitants. Austria’s geography is characterized by its mountainous terrain with over two thirds of the country covered by the Alps mountain range. The highest peak in Austria is Grossglockner at 3798 meters above sea level which is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Other notable mountains include Schneeberg (2941m), Dachstein (2995m) and Wilder Kaiser (2572m). The climate in Austria varies depending on elevation but generally has warm summers and cold winters with temperatures ranging from -3°C to 30°C throughout the year. Rainfall averages around 650mm per year with higher amounts falling during summer months while winter usually sees snowfall across much of the country. Austria also experiences extreme weather conditions such as floods and avalanches due to its mountainous terrain while thunderstorms are common during summer months.
