Armenia is a landlocked country located in the southern Caucasus region of Eurasia. It is bordered by Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. Armenia’s total area is about 29,743 square kilometers and its population is estimated to be around 3 million people. The country has a diverse geography with mountains occupying much of its landscape. The highest mountain peak in Armenia is Mount Aragats which stands at 4090 meters above sea level. The capital city of Yerevan lies at the foot of Mount Aragats and has an elevation of 950 meters above sea level. The majority of Armenia’s terrain consists of mountains and plateaus with elevations ranging from just under 1000 meters to over 4000 meters above sea level. These mountains are home to various wildlife species such as brown bears, wolves, lynx, jackals, wild boar, and many more. The Aras River flows through the country from north to south before emptying into Lake Sevan which is the largest lake in the Caucasus region and lies at an elevation of 1900 meters above sea level. Armenia has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters that can reach temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). Rainfall generally occurs from April to October while December to March are usually dry months. The country experiences occasional earthquakes due to its proximity to tectonic plates but these generally cause minimal damage due to strict building codes put in place by the government in recent years.
