St. Kitts and Nevis: Basseterre

The capital of St. Kitts and Nevis is Basseterre. It’s on St. Kitts, on the south coast. Basseterre has 13,000 inhabitants and thus about a quarter of the entire population of the island state. It was founded in 1625 by the French adventurer Pierre Belain d’Esnambuc and so it was given a French name. Basseterre means “Lower Land”. The second largest and only other “city” is on Nevis and is called Charlestown.
