South Carolina , abbreviated SC or S.Car. (South Carolina ), is a state on the east coast of the United States.
South Carolina is 80,582 km² and has about 4.7 million inhabitants. The capital is Columbia. Important industries are agriculture, with the cultivation of tobacco, soybeans, maize and cotton, animal husbandry and forestry. The state has a large textile and wood processing industry.
The area was colonized by Englishmen from about 1650. It was one of the 13 original states in the United States, and was a state from 1788. South Carolina was the first state to leave the union, in 1860, in connection with the American Civil War, 1861–65. The state is named after King Charles II of England. He’s called Palmetto State.
