Myanmar Flag

Myanmar is located in Southeast Asia on the east bank of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. British colonial rule ended in 1948. Unrest, uprisings, political oppression and ethnic conflicts soon dominated the scene. When the National League for Democracy (NLD) won free elections in 1990, the military prevented them from taking office.

The most important branch of the economy is agriculture. Myanmar’s natural treasures include abundance of fish and teak tree forests.

Myanmar: Naypyidaw

The country’s capital was relocated in 2005 and is now called Naypyidaw and is a city that was artificially created rather than naturally grown. The military planned it and its area is six times the size of Berlin. A little over a million people live there. Translated, the name means “royal city”, but in reality this city is anything but royal. Tourists can hardly find their way here. It cost billions of dollars to build – no details are available.
