Mozambique is a country in Southeast Africa. The economy in the former Portuguese colony is largely based on agriculture. In the 1980s, the economy was weakened by civil war, the brain drain of Portuguese workers, and several periods of drought. At that time, most of the plantations and industries were owned by the state. It was not until 1990 that the government introduced the free market economy.

Although Mozambique has significant raw material reserves, Mozambique’s trade balance is still very negative. The main exports are cashew nuts, crustaceans, cotton and sugar. For some years now, aluminum has been the most important export product. Machines, electronic devices, petroleum, food and consumer goods are imported.

Tourism is still in its infancy. Accommodation such as hotels etc. are rare, but the positive approaches of controlled tourism should change that soon.
