Moldova is a small landlocked country in south-eastern Europe. Until its independence in the early 1990s, Moldova was one of the wealthiest Soviet republics. Since then, due to the unresolved Transnistrian conflict (1992), the economic situation has deteriorated drastically. Moldova lives mainly from agriculture and the related industry. The favorable climate enables fruit and viticulture. Along with brandy and canned fruit and vegetables, wine is the main export item. There are also textile products and smaller electrical items.
