Michigan (Indian ‘large lake’; abbreviated Mich. or MI), state in the United States of 151,584 kmĀ². Michigan has about 10.1 million inhabitants, and its capital is Lansing. The largest city is Detroit. The state includes the south shore of Lake Superior and the land between Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.

Important industries are the transport equipment, machinery and automotive industries, and large cement and furniture factories. In addition, there is agriculture and mineral extraction. Michigan has been our state since 1837, and is called Great Lakes State and Wolverine State.
