Mayotte is an overseas territory (collectivité départementale) of France on the northern edge of the Mozambique Strait in the Indian Ocean. Mayotte is located between the northern part of Madagascar and the north of Mozambique.
Geographically, it belongs to the Comoros archipelago. Mayotte and the rest of the Comoros were ceded by Portugal to France in 1843. Mayotte was the only island in the archipelago to maintain ties with France in the 1974 vote and renounce independence. Since then, the Comoros state has laid claim to Mayotte and does not recognize that it belongs to France. This is based on a UN resolution from 1979. Mayotte is represented in the French National Assembly with a deputy and in the Senate with a senator. Since 2000, as a collectivité départementale, it has had a similar legal position to the Überseedépartements, but unlike them it is not part of the European Union. A small contingent of French soldiers (Foreign Legion) are stationed on the island to this day.
