Mauritania is a country in northwestern Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. The country is almost three times the size of Germany and, with the exception of a thorn-bush savannah zone from the capital Nouakchott, consists of desert along the southern border.
Mauritania is one of the poorest countries in the world and suffers from rural exodus, inadequate infrastructure and an uncertain political situation. In 1957 90% of the population still lived as nomads, now 40% live in cities. Islam is the state religion and Islamic law (Sharia) applies.
