Madagascar is the second largest island nation in the world after Indonesia. The presidential republic with a multi-party system is located in the Indian Ocean off the east coast of Africa.

Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. It is also called the “eighth continent”. This name comes less from the size of the island than from its long isolated development, which gave rise to a very independent nature: Madagascar was separated from Africa 150 million years ago and from India 90 million years ago.

Madagascar: Antananarivo

The capital of Madagascar is called Antananarivo and you can find it in the center of the island at an altitude of up to 1435 meters. The government and administration of the country can also be found here. Translated, Antananarivo means “city of a thousand”.

Lac Anosy lies in the middle of the city. It was built around this lake in 1625 and the lake is still in the center today. The city is best known for its Friday market, which has now been divided from a single square to several because there was always a lot of traffic chaos in the city on market day.
