Kenya is a state in East Africa. It borders Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and the Indian Ocean. Fossil finds from East Africa suggest that prehistoric humans lived in this area as early as 20 million years ago.

Kenya’s gross national product has grown above average in the last few decades compared to other African countries. Since the population growth was also above average, however, this did not result in a significant improvement in the living conditions of most Kenyans.

Kenya lives from the export of coffee and tea, from industry (machine and vehicle construction, textiles and clothing, food and luxury foods) and from tourism (national parks and game reserves). The trade in ivory and the shooting of elephants is prohibited.

In the last few years, as coffee lost its importance, so did the flower industry. In 2003, Kenya replaced Israel as the world’s largest flower exporter. Many flowers, especially roses, that we can buy here in Germany / Europe have made the long flight from the equator behind them.

Kenya: Nairobi

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and is often referred to as the “City in the Sun” or “City of Flowers”. More than four million people live here. Nairobi’s city center is not that different from a European city center. There are numerous high-rise buildings here, and people go shopping in large and small shops. But Nairobi has one special feature to offer: almost nowhere is the wilderness as close as here. Because the Nairobi National Park is practically at the gates of the city.

Nairobi is a modern and a rapidly growing city. It is one of the highest cities in Africa and also an important trading centerin East Africa. It is not particularly old, it was only built in 1899 as part of the expansion of a railway line.
