Honduras is in Central America. After Haiti, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Central America. Every year, many Hondurans emigrate abroad, primarily to the USA. Due to the lack of domestic economic stimulus, no improvement in the economy or a reduction in poverty is in sight.

Honduras: Tegucigalpa

The capital of Honduras is called Tegucigalpa. Quite a tongue twister, isn’t it? Even the locals usually abbreviate it with “Tegus”. The word Tegucigalpa means “silver mountain” in the Nahuatl language of the Nahua peoples. In the 16th century gold and silver were actually mined here.

Tegucigalpa is located in the south west of the country. More than a million people live there, many of them in slums on the outskirts. The rich, on the other hand, live in the Colonias , guarded living quarters. A big problem in the city is air pollution.
