Guyana is located in the north of South America. It borders on Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname, as well as the Atlantic. The area changed hands several times between the colonial powers of the Netherlands, the Kingdom of Great Britain and France until 1815. After the defeat of Napoléon Bonaparte, these three colonies were officially transferred to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. In 1831 these areas were merged as British Guiana. In 1966 Guyana became independent.

Guyana is one of the countries in the South American-Caribbean region that will be particularly hard hit by a rise in sea levels as a result of climate change. A sea-level rise of just 1m would inundate an area in Guyana that is home to 70% of the population and 40% of the country’s agricultural area.

Guyana: Georgetown

The capital of Guyana is Georgetown. 240,000 people live here, i.e. more than a quarter of the country’s population! Georgetown is on the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Demerara River. Because the city lies in very flat land, it is protected by dikes. It was named in 1812 after the British King George III.
