Ghana is in West Africa. The modern state of Ghana takes its name from the old kingdom of Ghana, which geographically was located a few thousand kilometers to the northwest and has no historical continuity with the modern state of Ghana. In pre-colonial times, there were several large empires and federations in the area of today’s state of Ghana, e.g. the Ashanti Empire in central western Ghana, which was not finally conquered by the British colonial rulers until the beginning of the 20th century, the kingdom of Dagomba in northern Ghana and the federation the Fanti in the south.

Ghana is one of the world’s most important gold miners and also the second largest producer of cocoa. Nevertheless, Ghana is still one of the poorest countries in the world.
