Timor-Leste (also known colloquially as East Timor, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste) is a country in Southeast Asia. It consists of the eastern half of the island of Timor, the exclave Oecusse in the western part and the islands of Atauro and Jaco. The state is roughly the size of Schleswig-Holstein and has a population of just over a million. As a Portuguese Timor, it was a colony for 500 years, then declared its independence on November 28, 1975. Just nine days later, Indonesia occupied the small neighboring state. Almost a fifth of the population died as a result of the 24-year occupation and guerrilla warfare. After a referendum and a last wave of violence, the international community intervened in 1999 and after three years of UN administration, East Timor became the first state in the 21st century to be declared on 20th.
