The Dominican Republic ( Spanish República Dominicana ) is a on the island of Hispaniola of the Greater Antilles between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean situated island nation. It covers the east and the center of the island, while the western third is occupied by the state of Haiti.

The nationals are called Dominicans in German.

The Dominican Republic should not be confused with the island of Dominica, which belongs to the Lesser Antilles and whose citizens are called Domini c aner.

The country formerly ruled by Spain is the largest tourist destination in the Caribbean.

Dominican Republic: Santo Domingo

The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo. It is on the south coast. Around 3 million people live in the city. This makes it the largest city in the Caribbean. It was founded in 1496 by the brother of Christopher Columbus , Bartolomé Columbus. The old town is part of the world cultural heritage of mankind. There is the oldest cathedral and the oldest palace in the New World. This palace is the Alcázar de Colón and was built between 1510 and 1514. It was the seat of the viceroy and the Spanish colonial government.
