Cambodia is located in Southeast Asia on the Gulf of Thailand. It borders Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The very eventful history of Cambodia spans a period of almost 1200 years. It ranges from the cultural and political heyday of the Khmer Empire (9th to 15th centuries) with Angkor as the center, through the colonial rule of the French (1863-1945) and the terrible regime of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979) to the present still very young democracy.

The capital of Cambodia is called Phnom Penh. It can be compared to the big cities in Southeast Asia. The city is located in the southwest of Cambodia, on the Tonle Sap, which is a tributary of the great Mekong River. This means that even small ships can easily reach the capital. Cambodia’s important international airport is also located here. A university and the country’s economic center are also in Phnom Penh.
