Botswana is a country in southern Africa. In the dry inland, a central plateau separates the densely populated grassland in the east from the Kalaharis desert and the marshes of the Okavango Delta. The economy is thriving because of the diamond deposits. Because of its political stability, economic development and the steady improvement of living conditions, Botswana is often referred to as a “model country” in Africa. However, due to the high endemic AIDS rate and the associated high mortality, the further economic development of Botswana is very endangered. About 40% (as of 2004) of adults are infected with HIV – the highest rate in the world. The disease is increasingly threatening the socio-economic existence of the country.
Biggest Cities of Botswana by Population
The capital of Botswana is called Gaborone. It was named after an important chief of the country. It is located in the southeast of Botswana. 232,000 people live in Gaborone. This makes it the largest city in the country. In 1966, the year of independence, Gaborone was a village with just 1000 inhabitants. But then a little later diamonds were found in northern Botswana and the city developed quickly.
