The Gambia is a state in West Africa, located on the banks of the
Gambia River. The fertile banks of the Gambia River have been populated for
thousands of years. In the late 17th century to the end of the 18th century,
England and France fought over political and economic rule over the rivers in
Senegal and Gambia. The Peace of Paris of 1763 gave Great Britain control over
Gambia, the French only got a small enclave around Albreda north of the river.
This was ceded to Great Britain in 1857. After independence in 1970, the Gambia
was considered a stable democracy until the military coup in 1994.
The long-serving President of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, who was elected in 2016, was
only persuaded to hand over power to his legitimate successor after a few months
and the threat of military force from neighboring countries.
