Population of America
The country of America now has more than 300 million inhabitants. Less than 250 years ago, the original states had barely three million inhabitants, in 1915 already 100 million and in 1968 200 million. So you can say that America is growing at a rapid pace.
Nearly 80% of the population of America lives in urban or suburban areas. Nearly three-quarters of the American population is originally of European descent, but this percentage is diminishing by other groups through immigration and births. According to the 2000 census, the largest minority group was Latino, representing 35,305,818 people, which is approximately one-eighth of the population. This figure mainly includes people of Mexican, Puerto Rican and Cuban origin. The African American population was 34,658,190, or 12.3% of the population, although an additional 0.6% of the population was of partially African American origin. The Asian population was 10,242,998 in 2000, or 3.6%, and consisted mainly of people of Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Vietnamese, Korean or Japanese origin. The Native American population of the United States, such as Eskimos in Alaska and on the Aleutian Islands, had a population of 2,475,956, or 0.9%. Roughly one-third of Native Americans lived in reservations, trust land, or other land under Native American jurisdiction. There were 398,835 Hawaiians and other Oceanians in 2000. So you can say that the origin of the population of America is very diverse.
Main Cities of America
Below are some cities in America that can be classified as one of the most important cities in America.
You need an ESTA visa to enter the United States. It is best to apply for an ESTA in good time to avoid disappointment.
New York
The City of New York is the largest city in the United States of America, and is located in the state of New York. Its leading and influential role in trade and finance, media, education, entertainment, art, fashion and publicity makes it one of the world’s most important cities. In Dutch people often speak of New York. The name New York City, or NYC for short, distinguishes the city from the state of the same name.
The New York metropolitan area is one of the largest metropolitan areas on Earth. The city is also the most populous major city in the United States with more than 8.3 million inhabitants spread over an area of 789.43 km². New York City is made up of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.
The city was founded in 1625 under the name New Amsterdam as a trading post of the Dutch. The city came into British hands in 1664 and was the capital of the United States from 1783 to 1790. Since that last year, New York has been the largest city in the United States.
Many of the city’s landmarks and neighborhoods are known around the world and often symbolize the United States in general. There are the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, several skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building and until 2001 the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Due to its bustle and vibrancy, the city has earned the nickname The City That Never Sleeps (“the city that never sleeps”). Another popular nickname is the Big Apple, although the exact origin of this nickname is less certain.
Los Angeles
L.A. as Los Angeles is popularly known is a large, sprawling city on the west coast of the United States. It is the largest city in the state of California and the second largest in the United States. The city, whose name is often abbreviated to LA, is nicknamed The City of Angels.
Los Angeles has a population of more than 4 million inhabitants. More than twelve million people reside in the entire Los Angeles region.
The city originated on the Los Angeles River and was referred to by the Spanish as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora La Reina de Los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula ( The Village of Our Lady The Queen of Angels of the River of Porciúncula ). The city, along with other places, is located on the plain where the flood had free space, which is now referred to as Los Angeles Plains.
Chicago
Chicago is the largest city in the US state of Illinois and the administrative center of Cook County. With a population of nearly three million people in the city and just under ten million inhabitants in the entire region, Chicago is the third largest city in the US after New York and Los Angeles.
The city is located on the shore of Lake Michigan, about 300 kilometers from Illinois’ capital Springfield. Chicago covers an area of 606 km². Chicago is nicknamed the Windy City.
Houston
Houston is the largest city in Texas (United States of America) and is located on the Gulf of Mexico. The city is the fourth largest city in the Americas and the second largest on the Gulf Coast. The city is located in Harris County, the third most populous county in the US. Houston has between two and three million inhabitants, with the surrounding suburbs this rises to just under six million, the city is growing steadily.
Philadelphia
Philadelphia is a city in the eastern United States and is the largest city in the state of Pennsylvania. The city played an important role in the history of the United States. Founded in 1681, it was the scene of the American Declaration of Independence in 1776, and was the capital of the United States from 1790 to 1800.
Popularly, the town is often referred to as “Philly”. The name Philadelphia comes from Greek and means ‘Brotherly love’.
It is the sixth largest city in America with just under two million inhabitants. Nearly six million people live in the entire region.
Worth seeing is the old town with Independence Hall, many old buildings, such as that of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the Rodin Museum, with the largest collection of Rodin’s works outside France. The Philadelphia Orchestra has been an integral part of the city’s cultural life since 1900.
Washington DC
Washington DC is the capital of the United States. “DC” stands for “District of Columbia”, the special federal district that contains the capital. The District of Columbia is named after an ancient, poetic name for the United States: Columbia (in turn derived from Columbus). This district does not belong to any state, because they did not want a state to exert influence over the capital. As a result, the residents of DC do not participate in the elections of the US Congress, because that represents the states. They do take part in the presidential elections.
The area in which the original government capital was located has been designated as a separate area: District of Columbia. The names Washington and DC refer to the same area: Washington is a city that completely fills DC. To avoid confusion with the state of Washington, the Americans never speak of Washington but always of Washington, DC or simply DC
Named after the first US president, George Washington, the city is located on the Potomac River. The population of the city is approximately 600,000. The entire metropolitan area includes parts of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia in addition to the District of Columbia, and has a population of nearly five million.
Washington DC was designed as the capital. The original layout plan clearly shows the separation of powers: the Washington Monument forms the center of a half cross. At the tip of the north leg of the cross is the White House, where the president sits as the head of the executive branch, and at the end of the east leg is the Capitol, where the legislature is located.
Today, Washington DC is only a small portion (several square miles) of the urban area that lies here; the many extensions of government buildings and residential areas are, as mentioned, in the neighboring states of Virginia and Maryland. The military center, the Pentagon, is also located outside Washington DC, in the state of Virginia. Washington has a reputation for being an unsafe city.
San Francisco
San Francisco, located on the west coast of the United States, is the fourth largest city in California after Los Angeles, San Diego, and San José.
The city, which has less than a million inhabitants, is located on a spit of land that separates the Pacific Ocean from San Francisco Bay. The metropolitan area in which San Francisco is located consists of the cities of San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley, all of which surround the San Francisco Bay. With more than seven million inhabitants, it is the fifth largest conurbation in the United States, only larger than New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC-Baltimore.
Characteristic of San Francisco are its hills. The city is built on no less than 43 hills. The most famous symbols of the city are the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, the Transamerica Pyramid and the funiculars. The gay district of Castro also enjoys international fame.
